PC Andy Plant said: "We have been at the family's house and spoken to the victims, who are naturally distraught.

"There was nothing they could do because the offenders forced their way in but it is such a sad time for it to happen.

"Forensics officers and we in the local policing team are now doing everything possible to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

"There has been an increase in burglaries in Gloucester in the last couple of months and Christmas has the habit of drawing out offenders so I would urge homeowners to be vigilant.

"Please visit our website www.gloucestershire.police.uk for more advice about security measures you can take to protect your house as best as possible."

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area or has any information about this crime should call 101, quoting incident 321 of December 18.

Alternatively information can also be given anonymously on 0800 555 111, or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. In some cases Crimestoppers offer rewards of up to £1000 where information leads to a conviction.
