Cirencester flat death: Murder arrest man released on police bail

A MURDER investigation has been launched after a 45-year-old man suffered injuries at his flat.

An ambulance rushed to a flat in Stepstairs Court, Watermoor Road, Cirencester in the early hours of yesterday morning. Paramedics treated the man at the scene for groin injuries, but his condition quickly deteriorated and he died at 1.15am yesterday.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "The patient went into cardiac arrest as a result of the injuries and the paramedics carried out CPR and worked on him for a good few minutes.

"Unfortunately they were unable to resuscitate him and he was declared dead at the scene."

The spokesman said the man had dialled 999 himself as he was about to lose consciousness.

Paramedics requested police to attend the scene "for their own safety", he said.

Neighbours said that six police cars, a police dog and an ambulance headed to Stepstairs Court at around 1am.

The body was removed from the flat at around 11.30am and a post mortem was due to be carried out yesterday afternoon.

Neighbours said the block of flats has been no stranger to incidents over the past months.

Last July a man needed 15 stitches to his face after an attack in the building, and one elderly resident believed a young woman had died of a drugs overdose there last year.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said "the street has changed" for the worse since the flats were built.

Cirencester's community leaders have been left shocked by the death.

The Rev Penny Light, associate priest for Cirencester, said: "Everyone's thoughts will be with the family of the victim.

"Watermoor is a warm-hearted supportive community and support will be forthcoming to anyone who needs it."

Cirencester's deputy major, Councillor Joe Harris, said: "It's really sad and deeply shocking."

Cotswold district councillor Jenny Hincks (LD, Cirencester-Watermoor), said: "I'm shocked. I think Watermoor's a good community and one that has a lot of community spirit."

  A 42-year-old-man from Cirencester who was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the death has been released on police bail.
