THOUSANDS of badgers will be shot in Gloucestershire to help alleviate bovine TB.

The first licences were issued yesterday to permit landowners to shoot the animals as part of a pilot cull.

It is a move sure to make emotions around this sensitive issue rise even further.

The badger cull debate has been a passionate one on both sides, with campaigners determined that there is an alternative - vaccination.

But farmers will tell you they face oblivion if any more time is lost.

And the police have fears too - estimates earlier this year put the cost of law enforcement linked to likely protests against the cull at £500million.

It remains to be seen how that will play out but the argument is sure to be far from over just yet.

“Badgers aren't cuddly. Neither am I. That doesn't mean that we have any fewer rights to exist. If Brian May used the 'cuddly' argument seriously, then he's an idiot. However, it may be that he was being ironic or sarcastic? I didn't see the interview.

I still favour mass vaccination of badgers, followed by cattle vaccination when that becomes legally possible. I have seen nothing to suggest that badger vaccination won't work. Culling is seen by some as an easier and quicker 'solution' to the bTB problem, but even Defra say that it will only reduce bTB in cattle by 16%.”

“While I have said repeatedly, I've no idea what's the best course of action, especially as both sides are in complete disagreement, Brian May completely blew his arguement apart this morning on Breakfast TV, when he said 'what will the children think when all those cuddly badgers have been killed'!”
