IT does seem particularly galling that when there are, according to the latest statistics, 1.2m children in England living in fuel poverty that British Gas records a large increase in profits.

When it comes to the big hitters of the energy world, companies such as British Gas, E.on, NPower and others raised their prices last year which meant we all felt the extra pinch during the cold weather.

Some people simply cannot afford to turn the heating on for fear of the cost.

But it seems many of us are also not helping ourselves in shopping around when it comes to our suppliers.

We should use our spending power to demonstrate we are not prepared to simply accept the price rises without questioning the tariffs we are given.

NO ONE wants to walk down a one-size-fits-all high street no matter how much we love the big name brands.

Gloucester does have, admittedly, its fair share of coffee shops, charity stores and bookmakers but it also has a heart and soul which sets it apart.

Independent traders and the market stall holders sit alongside the chain stores to bring character to our city centre.

Yes, there is more work to do but there are people striving all the time to fill our empty shops and attract the small retailer and the big name brands to ensure it is a High Street fit for the future.

WHEN it comes to the grub served up at the National Star College it really does seem people are crying out for more.

We all know the Star Bistro is a culinary gem and well worth a visit but now the nation knows it too after winning the regional heat on the new ITV series Food Glorious Food. Well done.

“It's a private company, every company is looking at putting prices up and/or cutting costs, just like Tesco food going up in price, so why has BG just been highlighted ?”

“I really don't see why the government can't just take over, or start a energy company.
The people in this country shouldn't have to line peoples pockets for things we have no choice about,
nationalise some bloody utilities, and take the trains back too while your at it.”

“BG's view that customers should foot the bill for investing in expanding their capacity does not sound right - it is for BG investors to finance expansion of future capacity and in return share in the profit.

The profits posted is criminal and it is for the regulator to protect the customers from such excess profits - perhaps a one-off tax on the excess profit.”
