City MP Richard Graham slams railway station lifts that don't work

The elderly , disabled and those with young children in buggies should not have to struggle to get across from one platform to the other in this day and age .
If you are in a wheelchair and need to get across to platform 1 from platform 4 ( or visa versa ) you currently have to attract the attention of rail staff , and hope they are free to take you down to the end of the long platform , negotiate the uneven crossing over the lines and then go back up the other platform . Maybe that doesn't sound much to an able bodied person, but, sat in a wheelchair or walking on crutches on a old wet day it's no joke, and very tiring .

I predict that once the lifts are up and running it's not just going to be those with mobility problems who will use them , you can bet that able bodied people of all ages will use them too !

Having the much needed lifts will greatly enhance the train experience of many , many people and be a welcome edition to the wonderful ''Passenger Assist'' service that is already in place all over the rail network .”

“Sandra, I don't want to sound unsympathetic to people with mobility issues, but wouldn't someone having problems walking or wheeling as far as the end of the platform have to negotiate greater distances on reaching their destination?”

For a large number of people the lack of lifts is not a trivial issue !”

“Mr Graham might have gained some credibility if he'd supported his constituents in their thwarted quest for a new station at the Triangle rather than the trivial issue of when some lift should open.”

“The delays have been caused by the upgrade of the electrical supply to the railway station and the installation of phone lines for the emergency phones inside the lift. The upgrade of the electrical supply is beyond the control of rail track so Dick Graham aught to get his facts correct before he shoots his mouth off!”

“The lifts are good, because they will not only assist the disabled and elderly but also those with prams, with heavy luggage, bikes etc. It's crazy though how long it's taking to get them operational. The building work all seemed to be completed months ago but the lifts are still fenced off. I've seen other stations have lifts built and opened in the same period, so what's the delay at Gloucester?”

“For two million quid, we could *fly* the wheelchair users between platforms in a helicopter, surely?”
