City council workers switch to greener travel
City council workers forced to pay for their car parking have switched to greener ways of getting into work.Gloucester City Council started to charge its workers £250 per year to use staff car parks from January 2011.Since then there has been a 25 per cent drop in usage, with more workers car sharing, taking the bus and cycling. But the council's 'green travel' plan still has some way to go – the most popular way of getting into work is still travelling alone, in a car.Environmental co-ordinator Stephen McDonnell said: "Green travel plans are not a legal requirement but many types of council have produced and implemented them, setting a good example to other organisations."City councillors were told of the progress with the plan, one year on, at their cabinet meeting on Wednesday night.
