DRUG dealing and anti-social behaviour concerns have been unearthed during a police operation in Barton.

Officers have visited those living in Llandilo Street, Regent Street, Dainty Street and Belgrove Terrace, and residents were asked what they thought of the area and what they would like to see done to improve it.

Sergeant Lynn Northfield: "It was a great morning and the feedback was generally very positive, with some people having no issues and many feeling safe living in Barton and Tredworth.

"In all, we knocked on about 60 doors. There were some concerns about drug dealing, and as we have said before we are tackling those issues by carrying out warrants and acting on the information we receive from the public.

"We want to increase that flow of information by tapping into the community spirit and setting up more Neighbourhood Watch schemes so we spoke to people about that too."

“This would be the long promised 'door-knocking exercise', finally being enacted, then.

Funnily enough, I got 'collared' by PC Lynn Northfield (until I hear differently, I have to assume that with Sergeant Karen Horsley taking over Barton St station, albeit part-time, the 'Acting Sergeant' devolves back to 'Constable'), claiming I'd said Police Panels had been promised and not delivered, when it fact this was not the case. As I had quite explicity referred to the door-knocking promise, I guess I have to accept that email communication is a waste of everyone's time, but phone calls and actual meetings don't guarantee accurate recollection either. The sergeant is not looking too promising either, despite earlier services (allegedly) rendered.

Sadly, between my asking local councillors to help residents on our street set up a Watch, with Sajid Patel suggesting distributing a questionaire but then ignoring my positive response and query about what questions would be asked, and this initiative, lead thieves targeted several houses on our street. When I emailed the police for more information about the letterbox fires which prompted neighbours to ask me about a Watch scheme in the first place, my mail was ignored.

In the face of this apathy, I would palm off any door-knocker with 'Fine, just fine', and reserve my true opinions for a more public forum. I'm sure other people will come on to defend the authorities, which is also fine, but I still think this is the best way to illustrate specific cases, whether they are derided as 'whinging' or not.”
