A climber was rescued by emergency crews after falling down a 40-foot cliff face near Coleford in the Forest of Dean.

Teams were called out to Symonds Yat cliff, near English Bicknor, after the alarm was raised at around 3pm on Thursday afternoon.

On arrival they found the climber at the bottom of the cliff with serious hip and arm injuries.

The man was put on a stretcher after paramedics were lowered to the site by rope and carried to a waiting ambulance.

He was then taken to Hereford Hospital to be assessed further.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said the rescue operation was far from straightforward.

"The falling light made the rescue difficult and crews from fire and ambulance worked well to rescue the climber," he said.
