EVENINGS of culture are in store for members of the Friends of St Mary's church in Prestbury.

The group, which formed last autumn to raise funds for the upkeep of the historic building in Mill Street, has organised a musical soiree for next month.

The event, on April 10, will feature musicians Michael Freyhan and Frances Mason playing strains of Mozart and Bach, supported by singers Annie Barton and Paul Hodges.

The soiree is part of an ever-growing programme of events put on by the club, which has raised more than £11,000 since it was founded.

Members are planning to hold a wine-tasting evening during the summer and there are also plans to set up a local history club.

Jim Mackie, one of the group leaders, said: "The group has got off to a great start and we hope it continues to go from strength to strength.

"A large proportion of the funds raise can be attributed to people who aren't regular church goers, which is really encouraging.

"It just shows how important St Mary's church is to the cultural identity of the village."
