Comet staff told St Oswald's store will close on Monday

It's a shame that Waitrose won't move in to Gloucester or a mini-John Lewis store. That would be a proper statement of intent.

Anyway, it's not just Gloucester that has rows of Charity/Pound shops - Cardiff and Swansea have them too!”

Poundland was recently opened on the former Curry's digital store in Eastgate Street!

But my guess is the pound shops in Gloucester will no doubt want to expand and eventually want to move out to out-of-town shopping areas, there are lots of empty units awaiting them like the old Allied Carpets store on Eastern Ave, the now empty fire station next to Aldi, the soon to be empty Royal Mail depot etc.”

“I was in the St. Oswalds store this afternoon, manic buying by everyone, display TVs going left right and centre. I'd read that Comet had put its prices up before bringing them back down to show "sale" prices. This was confirmed by an employee of another electrical store - 15% by all accounts. My husband and I were looking for a TV and had more or less chosen one in the store but decided to go to another unconnected to Comet store instead and found a better TV, same make and cheaper,only by £7 and of course with a guarantee should anything go wrong. I don't know what happens with Comet guarantees because it is up to the retailer to deal with faults etc. Hopefully the people who rushed out to buy cheap electrical goods won't be regretting it in the future.

Apparently the Comet store in Eastern Avenue "isn't closing" as one employee said, something to do with the lease.”

“Fair comment about business owners when you are referring to small business. Comet was bought for a couple of pounds by a company who believed they could make money from it one way or the other and they probably will! I'll save my sympathy for the staff even if they do leave with a bit of redundancy money - it won't go far these days.”

“Redundancies are not nice for anyone BUT employees will at least walk away in the end with a pay packet, very often the business owners get nothing and come off very badly. Most often they have put in personal guarantees, life saving etc to make a business work. They NEVER get any sympathy, it is always the employees.”

Out of town pound shops are all that's missing from the strategic goal of every Gloucester shop from being a Charity, Pound or Betting shop.

Imagine the fantastic concept of a warehouse sized pound shop and being able to park outside!”
