Community activists invited to attend campaign training workshops
GAVCA has joined forces with national charity the Sheila McKetchnie Foundation to stage a one-day workshop designed to equip people with campaign skills to bring about change at a local or national level.
The workshop, being held on Friday April 19, is geared towards beginner campaigners and will provide the chance for people to find out how to develop a campaign strategy and identify the key skills needed to run an effective campaign.
It is expected that participants will already be involved at a basic level of campaigning or are just about to get started.
"GAVCA exists to help voluntary groups and charities have a voice in the community so that they can influence local decisions which affect them and the people they support," said Sally Pickering, Chief Executive of GAVCA, the Gloucestershire Association for Voluntary and Community Action.

"Whether a community or voluntary group wants to campaign for a change in the law to help the people they work with or to influence a planning application in their community - if you want practical information and advice about the next steps, then this campaign workshop is for you," she added.
.
Workshop places are expected to fill up quickly and priority places will be given to people who have the least experience in campaigning, have the fewest resources, and need support in developing their campaign/issue further.
The day will provide:
• Insight into the successful features of a campaign.
• Sessions on the key steps in planning a campaign.
• Examples of successful campaigns from a range of different sectors.
• An opportunity to gain insights directly from a journalist and a local politician about how to gain support for your campaign.
• A chance to meet other campaigners working to make change in your area.
Jenny Eastwood, Assistant Editor at The Citizen newspaper and Gloucester MP Richard Graham have confirmed that they will be in attendance and will support mini 'surgery sessions' so that those attending can ask questions specific to their campaigns and get tailored advice.
"Newspapers like The Citizen reflect the mood of the local community and we're always keen to hear from campaigners trying to change things that they feel passionately about," said Jenny Eastwood, Assistant Editor at The Citizen.
"I'm delighted to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge about how local newspapers operate so that campaigners feel confident in contacting the media to raise awareness of their cause," added Jenny.
