Conservatives announce shortlist for Police Commissioner
CONSERVATIVES in Gloucestershire have announced their shortlist of candidates for the new Police and Crime Commissioner role in the county.
The new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) will be elected in November this year and their role is "to be the voice of the people and hold the police to account" according to the Home Office.
Conservatives in Gloucestershire today revealed the three people they have selected to fight to be the candidate.
The three shortlisted candidates are Victoria Atkins, a barrister from Great Rissington in the Cotswolds, County Councillor Rob Garnham - former head of the Gloucestershire Police Authority - and Leader of the County Council, Mark Hawthorne.

“The danger with selecting a career politician, particularly one who is of the current ruling party, is that they will be only interested in appeasing their "masters" at Westminster. The Police locally will suffer swinging cuts just so that the PCC can say he or she kept the precept on the council tax down. Public services cost money. Its all very well getting a cheer for a sixpence reduction in the council tax but the net effect will be even fewer officers than their are now.
Hawthorne will be seeing this as his chance to shine n the eyes of the home office and will not care a damn if the police go to the wall.”

“The appointment of the first Police Commissioner for Gloucestershire needs clear and careful consideration. From the outset, the post is the Police and Crime Commissioner and therefore embraces more than just looking at the running of the Police Force. It will require the appointed candidate to have a thorough understanding of how to reduce the crime rate, re-offending as well as running a competent and efficient Police Force with the retention of Police and Community Support Officers. It goes without saying that the eventual candidate will need to have some experience of public office and will inevitably need to balance a number of priorities and objectives. One would therefore think that the best candidate for the role would be one who has experience of Policing and Crime matters already as well as having a competent background of public office. Consistency should be the aim of the Conservative party in these matters. Equally a knowledge and background of the local area should be a pre-requisite for this post in order to inspire confidence in the public as well as the Police Force they will be serving. This should not be a job for a career politician biding their time before the next general election or before something better comes along. Having failed to become an MP in far away constituencies should not be a qualification for this job. Looking closely at all three candidates, it is apparent that there is one who has positive experience in Crime and Policing matters and is currently serving on the Police Authority. He is also a local chap familiar with the area and personalities. Is he not the best man for the job?”

“I was going to say the female candidate looks the best as she is not a wannabee politician but judging by her blog she is just that with an endorsement from someone saying that she would make a first rate MP. Can't help thinking that even if a candidate is endorsed by a political party it would be better if they are not already a politician or a want to be one.”

“Hawthorne would be a disaster, he has presided over a shambles at GCC. Clearly a career politician rather than someone who goes into politics to improve the lives of people.”
