Controversial 'Hurst-style' goal frustrates Shortwood
THE rub of the green abandoned Shortwood United on Tuesday night as Didcot Town halted a fantastic run for John Evans side with a controversial goal in a 1-0 victory.
Wood had put together back-to-back 3-0 Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West victories and went to the Loop Meadow Stadium in confident mood.
But Taylor Janes turned Sir Geoff Hurst for the day for the hosts as his shot rebounded off the cross bar and seemingly away to safety – at least as Wood boss John Evans saw it.
"From where we were watching it didn't look clear that it was in," Evans said. "But the most disappointing thing is that the linesman wasn't up with play and he gave it.

"But those things happen – and it's about the third time that kind of thing has happened to us this season and I am sure that it will even itself out soon.
"I thought we had got away with it on this occasion, but to be fair it was a lovely move and the best player on the pitch scored.
"But given our two previous performances it was a bit disappointing that we weren't quite so good in the final third.
"On Saturday at Mangotsfield we were fantastic and scored some fantastic goals as we were against Poole, but we just couldn't back it up.
"We maybe didn't deserve the win, but we certainly deserved a draw from the game."
Hopes aren't high that Saturday's trip to Bridgwater Town will go ahead owing to the close proximity of their Fairfax Park ground to the River Parrett.
Evans has been told that the chances of the game going ahead are already 50-50 and although no more rain is forecast it could be a battle against the odds to get the game on.
"They said on Tuesday that it didn't look good and there was a downpour on Wednesday night so it's not looking good.
"We're desperate to play as we don't want to get left behind with it being so close to the end of the season."
Matt Bennett is away for the weekend so will miss the game as will striker Kevin Slack whose recovery from a knee injury will be better served by playing 90 minutes with the reserves.
The former Bishop's Cleeve striker played the final ten minutes at Didcot and a full 90 for the reserves last week and reported no recurrence of his knee problem.
