Cotswold MP explains why he voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill
Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP has explained why he voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill last night.
The Conservative MP for the Cotswolds said one of the reasons he voted against the bill was because his constituents urged him to do so.

He confirmed that only a handful of constituents had written to him supporting the Bill. After the he said: “I fully support same sex couples to participate in civil ceremonies, which give them all of the rights and privileges that married couples have.
“However I believe that marriage, whether it be civil or religious, is different because it is between a husband and a wife mainly with the aim of having children.

“Whatever your feelings on the policy in question, surely it is a disturbing day for democracy when a policy can be suggested by A US president to a British PM one day and be UK law a few months later? This policy had no clamour from the populace, no clear and present need, no electoral mandate from the coalition parties' voters and discussion through committee was closed to all but a few members? One would also think that given the new front in the "War on Terror" (TM) opening up, confidence in this nations leaders at a new low, not to mention the worsening financial crisis that MPs would have more pressing matters to attend to? Seriously!
One has to ask what is the point in voting in such a system when its very principles are undermined at every opportunity by the people who we vote for?”

“Many people disapprove of same sex anything, however, in this pc climate they are unable to express such views. An indirect way of expression is to vote against anything that is related to furthering the rights of the LGBT community. Fortunately there are no thought police (yet).”

“Marriage is a contract of commitment between two people.
Same sex couples are allowed to live together.
Same sex couples are allowed to have a civil ceremony.
So why is there a problem with same sex marriages? There should be NO problem!”
