DISCOUNTS await savvy shoppers grabbing the newly-launched Stroud District Loyalty Card.

The scheme, arranged by Stroud District Council, aims to encourage customers to use local businesses, which in turn offer promotions and discounts of their own choice.

The cards are free to use and can be picked up at tourist information centres, Ebley Mill council offices and participating businesses.

On Saturday they were also being given out from a stand on the Subscription Rooms forecourt.

So far 80 traders have agreed to take part in Stroud and surrounding towns. Included are restaurants, shops, hotels and an optician.

Coun Roger Sanders (L Uplands), the council's executive member for regeneration, was confident the card would boost trade in the current economic climate.

"We hope it will continue to benefit them and their customers in the long term and that it grows in popularity," he said.
