PEOPLE who leave the doors open at a new toilet block in Tewkesbury are costing the town council money, the mayor has warned.

Councillor Chuck Pavey said some users of the public conveniences in Spring Gardens were leaving the doors open after they had used them so the next person would not have to pay to go in.

Mr Pavey said while people might think they are being kind to the next user, they are preventing much-needed income going to the town council.

He said: "We have put a considerable amount of money into the toilets to get a public service open, but people are abusing it.

"The doors are being left on the latch so the next person thinks it's free.

"I'm concerned about it."

He said he feared that if the problem continued, he was unsure whether the council could afford to maintain the toilets.

He said people had to realise that the authority was spending money on having them regularly cleaned and on toilet rolls. The Spring Gardens toilets and new conveniences in the Gloucester Road car park were opened last year after a joint project between the town and borough councils.

“Alchemies, those are Tewkesbury BOROUGH accounts. Not TOWN. There's your difference. : )”

“That's interesting, helenglos; I took the exact figure from Tewkesbury Borough Council's Accounts 2010/11. Are you saying that these published accounts are incorrect?”

“Alchemies - sorry the Town Councillors do not receive an allowance, but that does not mean that they are in tight control of the publics purse. It is the Borough members, the taxi token snatchers - FOUR severely disabled persons taxi tokens for one YEAR = one weeks pay for just one councillor, who pay themselves very nicely indeed, but I'm sure that is taken into account when staff are losing their jobs.”

“'much needed income'? Perhaps if the 2010/11 Members' Allowances claims had been less than £353,832.00, there wouldn't be a need to fuss about the loss of some 20p pieces.”

“The reg number of your car is not required in the car park behind the hospital. I often park there and often give my ticket away if other drivers are about and had the favour returned many times.”

“tommadeit - except in Tewkesbury you need to put in your registration number when you buy a ticket.

Put a ticket with someone else's number plate in your vehicle and the pesky traffic wardens will have sniffed you out before you have even have a chance to shut the car door.

Tewkesbury attracts a lot of tourists and the councils should be doing all they can to keep them coming (and coming back) and not putting obstacles in the way. Toilet charges, expensive parking, traffic wardens. I wouldn't be surprised to see Chuck down by the river asking for 50p for entry to the Ham.”

“Bonzaharris, Get a she-wee!! I am not joking when I say that a number of friends have bought them, not only for music festivals and hiking, but being caught short in places with no facililities.
Years ago I remember the penny slot toilets, and even then there was outrage that we had to pay to pee.
I'm not quite sure what we pay council taxes for anymore. The roads have potholes, the verges are left uncut, the flower beds filled in, litter is left un-picked, rubbish collections are fortnightly, recycling collections are spasmodic and leave us with other recyclable goods that they won't take. Youth groups are closed down, the streets are left uncleaned, council facilities are closed or reduced and all for what?
The council managers stay in there pointless over paid roles and the workers are made redundant or have their hours/wages cut.
I went to a so called 3rd world country a couple of weeks ago. Their steets were clean and they had a sense of optimism about them that this country has had sucked from us by years of bungling beurocracy and fat cat pay.
    Boooooooo.... well miserable now!
Think I need a cup of tea :(”
