Councillor hopes Gloucester Academy headteacher "wasn't pushed" to stand down
Parents are said to be in “complete shock” following the sudden departure of a Gloucester Academy’s headteacher.
John Reilly stepped down after two years at the helm, citing poor exam results, as the reason.
It came as the academy opened its new £15 million building in Cotteswold Road this term.
Parent and Tuffley’s County Councillor, Tracy Millard, said many of those with children at the school were disappointed to find out the new from the press and not directly from the school.

The Labour councillor said Mr Reilly’s departure has raised some serious questions and said she hopes he was not pushed into standing down by the school’s lead sponsor, Prospect.
She said: “Speaking as a parent of a child who attends Gloucester Academy, I am disappointed that the vast majority of parents first heard the news of Mr Reilly’s decision to step down as the head teacher in the press.
“Parents should have been told first and I am very disappointed that Prospect that oversees the running of the academy failed to ensure this happened.
“Mr Reilly is a highly respected head teacher and he has achieved a great deal for the academy during his two years as head teacher. I know many parent, pupils and teachers will be sorry to see him go.
“His sudden departure does raise serious questions. I sincerely hope this good head teacher was not ‘pushed’ out of his job by Prospect because of school’s mixed GCSE results.
“Gloucester Academy has a long way to go, but it has improved under Mr Reilly’s leadership. I would urge the trustees of the Gloucester Academy Trust and Prospects to meet with parents to explain what has happened and to outline their plans to appoint a new head teacher.”
