Susan and Luke Wilkinson are desperate for a baby and are calling on kind-hearted women to support a national campaign.

The couple, from Charlton Kings, have been trying for 10 years to conceive and fear they may be running out of time.

They are supporting the National Gamete Donation Trust in its efforts to encourage egg donors to help the growing numbers of women across Gloucestershire who are struggling to conceive.

Susan's case is similar to that of many women on a waiting list for a donation.

Her and husband Luke had a number of attempts at IVF treatment, but to no avail.

Three years later, a run of treatment led to her getting pregnant.

But, despite a perfect pregnancy, baby Remy's heart stopped beating and he was stillborn.

Susan said: "It was devastating but we both feel that having Remy showed us what we wanted and made us more determined to have a family.

"I have got to the stage where I'm not producing eggs and I need someone to help. Egg donation is my only option.

"We are 19th on the waiting list with a wait of 15 months.

"But, at 45, I only have one more year on the list before I become ineligible for donation, so this campaign really is critical.

"We have to be hopeful because the wait for a family is heartbreaking.

"We celebrate the arrival of nieces, nephews and friend's children but are almost in a self-imposed exile.

"We know there must be women out there who would want to do this, but don't know about it.

"It would make so much difference to our lives and those of others, I cannot describe it."

Dozens of women in Gloucestershire are struggling to conceive, yet they all face a wait of at least two-and-a- half years for the chance.

Their chance of a happy future rests on the generosity of a stranger.

But because only one woman agrees to donate her eggs every few months in the south west, couples like the Wilkinsons face a heartbreaking wait.

Pip Morris, from Apperley, near Tewkesbury, works for the National Gamete Donation Trust.

Pip, 41, would never have had children without an egg donor. She was devastated when she went through a premature menopause at the age of 16. Baby Dominic arrived 13 years' later thanks to an anonymous egg donor.

She said: "It took one lady to change our life and it has meant the world to us.

"There is a real shortage of donors and the wait for couples in Gloucestershire is currently two-and-a-half years.

"The donation process is so simple. It's four to six weeks of monitoring to change someone's life.

"Our children are so special to us but there are many other couples who desperately want a family."

“Sensible Bloke and Murchy - The adoption process is nigh on impossible. Despite the adverts that claim anyone can adopt, in reality, adoptive parents need to be absolutely whiter than white. You have to lay your life and soul wide open - would you want to do that?
We went 2/3rds of the way through this process before telling social services to butt out of our lives.
We were fortunate to concieve through IVF.”

“I found lots of information online and was very encouraged - donors are people from all walks of life - there is no such thing as a standard donor. What they have in common is a desire to help people to achieve the pregnancy they otherwise couldn't have.

    The website is at http://www.ngdt.co.uk/ and there's a confidential information line - 0845 226 9193

I think it's an amazing gift to give a couple who are so heartbroken”
