AN American bull snake, a gecko, a ferret and tarantula joined the hundreds of children who participated in half term fun at Gloucester's Waterways museum.

Angell Pets, of Abbeymead, brought the creatures to the museum on Thursday.

"It was the chance to for children to have real hands on experience that they wouldn't norammly get. We had lizards, spiders and stick insects and more," said Jackie Harris, deputy manager at the museum.

"We had three-year-olds who were delighted to hold the spider - which meant I had to do it too!"

The museum at Gloucester docks hosts children's activities every day in school holidays and there were craft activities throughout half term.

"We had boat-making, butterfly making, as well as tissue flowers in traditional water cans from boats. We had hundred of children taking part over the week," said Jackie.

All activities are free with admission.

“The Angell pets at the Museum was fantastic! The children loved it and it gave us the chance to experience pets that we would not normally consider. The man who showed the pets to the children was really patient and keen to explain about the animals. For anyone thinking about getting a pet it was a really good idea - and great fun for the rest of us. well done to the Museum for thinking of it - and well done to Mr Angell!”

“When are Angell Pets going to stop keeping their ferrets in those awful glass tanks, a totally unsuitable environment with no toys or proper bedding. What's worse is the awful two foot hutch they sell with the ferrets, far too small. Ferrets need a minimum of a two storey 4 foot hutch. They are active and intelligent animals. If they are kept in the housing this shop sells they get bored and frustrated and people end up with an animal that bites. Instead of the lovely friendly animals they should

If anyone is seriously thinking of a ferret as a pet then do your research first, http://tinyurl.com/753ohoc is a good place to start, and get your ferrets from a reputable rescue not a pet shop or breeder.”
