COUNTY Liberal Democrats have criticised the proposed trial badger cull in Tewkesbury.

The party's Shire Hall group says the scientific arguments for the cull do not add up.

The Government revealed that farmers will be allowed to apply for shooting permits as part of the move.

Councillor Klara Sudbury (LD, All Saints) said: "Those in favour of culling seem to base their arguments solely on the misery bovine TB causes for farmers, which I accept is appalling, but scientists warn these actions could increase incidents of the disease and so increase their misery."

Farmers say a cull is the only way to control the disease.

    “Why are badgers protected?

They are not rare, they are not harmless and they carry disease.

Why not just remove the protected status and let landowners decide for themselves the same as they currently do with deer and foxes?”

“They have their sights set on squirrels as well as they may or may not be TB carriers. Maybe we need to sacrifice the foxes to satisfy their blood fest and protect some semblance of British Wildlife. Would they be happy then? Doubt it !”

“IF (very unlikely) the pilot culls show a reduction in cattle TB, is the logic to then kill all badgers in the UK? This seems a grotesque and wildly impractical route when a vaccine is supposedly being developed.”
