“Of course cyclists are allowed to use dual carriageways. you can get a good tow effect from passing vehicles too. Slip type junctions are the problem as drivers travel up them expecting to merge with other traffic at about 50mph and can fail to see a cyclist.
If there were more cyclists on dual carriageways motorists would get used to them. Yes there were cyclist crossing points put in at the junction but theyre not mandatory and its easier not to use them.
Was this the type of accident that occurred?”

I am 99% positive there used to be.”

“Im pretty sure that you are allowed to cycle along the A40. I have done myself (but never on a weekday morning). At the exit and entry roads of the M5 roundabout/flyover (where I beleive this happened) which is the most dangerous bit of a dual carriageway for cyclists, there are short cycle routes the minimise the distance a cyclist has to travel while crossing these sections. THey are VERY overgrown/unmaintained (which one would expect really)”

“There is one safer routes I know off between Cheltenham and Gloucester than the A40 Golden Valley By-pass, The Old Gloucester Road B4634 or the Shurdington Road A46, it's very poorly sign posted, very poorly lit at night and parts of the route is rough and muddy, probably why it's not much used, but saferthan dicing with the motorists, it goes through Staverton Airport (Gloucestershire Airport) via Churchdown Parish Council buildings to Parton Rd then you can pick up the cycle path on the Cheltenham Road to Gloucester, the last part of the route between Longleven and the City Centre is just the gutter painted pink but better than nothing. If anyone else knows a better route for cyclists please post up the details. Hope both parties to the accident gets well soon! If Gloucestershire Highways are reading this, shame on you!”

“Perhaps someone from TIG could do a little investigative journalism for a change and check whether or not cyclists are allowed to use the Golden Valley? I seem to remember they used to be banned (following a spate of fatal accidents some years back) but a quick Street Map search failed to detect any road signs to this effect, although I might have missed them. For my part - I cannot understand why any cyclist would want to use this road, with there being several safer alternative routes - not to mention methods of committing suicide that do not involve others.”

“kessandkwai - Thank you for your constructive, well balanced view. You are correct, SOME cyclists do not take notice of traffic lights ,stop signs ,give ways and white lines. Can you confirm that ALL motorist do?
Apart from you view on cyclists not abiding by the rules of the road (which I believe applies to some motorists too), can you state why you are very anti cyclists?”
