SIMON Wells is calling for supermarket bosses to clean up their act after his daughter’s foot was pierced by a pin.

The 33-year-old, of Arle Road, has written to the chief executive of Sainsbury’s because three-year-old Ellie was injured at the firm’s Tewkesbury Road store, in Cheltenham.

The supermarket has since apologised for what happened.

Simon said: “She just stopped still and started crying, but was so shocked she couldn’t tell me what was wrong.

“She was gasping for breath for a while, but eventually told me it was her foot that was the problem.

“I then took her shoe off and that’s when I saw the pin sticking through. She was very distressed.”

Simon was shopping for a new top at 10.30am on August 7 when the incident happened.

The pin, which was three-quarters of an inch long, was thought to have come from an item of makeup.

Ellie received treatment from a first aider at the store.

Simon added: “They have a duty of care to their customers.

“Whichever way you look at it, they should have better security methods than pins that drop on to the floor and better cleaning to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen.

“It’s not like she had to go rummaging around for it, because the pin was lying in the middle of the floor.”

Sainsbury’s spokeswoman Cheryl Kuczynski said: “It’s completely unacceptable that the pin was found upon the floor.

“Our colleagues are trained to keep the floors clear from any hazards and it’s particularly important with a sharp item. The store manager, Tim Jackson, has reminded his colleagues to be extra vigilant to prevent anything like this from happening again.”
