Scott Brown brilliantly saved Sam Williams' penalty ten minutes later after Steve Elliott tripped the striker.
Cheltenham improved in the latter stages, with substitutes Byron Harrison and Marlon Pack making a positive impression, but they rarely looked like scoring a leveller.
Shaun Harrad's fourth minute shot that was blocked by Chris Lewington was the only serious effort Mark Yates' side had on target all afternoon.

“The players need a kick up the backside after a performance like that. Listened to commentary, Chelt were playing hoof ball from the 1st minute - why? Who told them to do that? The manager? I would doubt it, Chelt have plenty of players who can pass the ball around and through teams, but at the mo, with pitches in boggy conditions, the players (especially away from home recently), seem to be resorting to long ball tactics as soon as a few passes go astray. McG is also getting far more attention and cover from away teams this season - but he should be realising this now and be changing his game to allow for this. Maybe MY should switch McG and Mo over for a few matches, this would throw the oppo into a bit on confusion (hopefully not our players too!), but would mean that Mo could attack down the wing WITHOUT cutting in almost every time he attacks. The new players will take time to gel, and we do have potentially a very strong attacking team waiting to emerge. But if the wingers are not involved in the match and the delivery into the strikers is poor or not there at all, then we aren't gonna be scoring - simples. A very poor performance from Chelt, deserved to lose, only Brown could come out with any credit (another brilliant penalty save). Chelt will have have to up their game ten-fold if they are to get anything at Southend. We have the players to do it, but we need to start playing as a cohesive team and quickly!!”

“i feel a bit sorry fo MY.he,s a depressed man.his confidence is low,and his decision making is poor.after the rovers game, most fans would say that mo should be dropped & a creative midfield player in because penn & taylor are too much alike.but he puts out the same side for the daggers game, still playing the same way.then he still won't change it until 65mins.does howorth think any differently, pheraps he should have a word in MY ear.we've got the squad to go up.i hope that daft selection choices don't cost us the chance to go up.”
