Dan's audio drama is a national success
EVERYONE likes to see the underdog triumph and for Daniel Macnaughton that is exactly what happened.
The 22-year-old student couldn't believe his luck when the audio drama he created in his bedroom during a boring summer holiday won a national BBC competition.
He fended off two rivals who had professional producers and big money behind them.
Daniel, who is the son of King's School headmaster Alistair Macnaughton, won best online drama at the BBC Audio Drama Awards, for his futuristic piece Above and Below.

He picked up the top gong from his TV idol David Tennant, of Doctor Who fame, at a glitzy awards do in London on Sunday.
"I was bored in the summer and wanted something to do, so I set about writing the 70-minute drama and cast actors on the internet.
"I never met the performers. They sent in their audio to me and I put it all together.
"I was completely flabbergasted to be even nominated. I've never done anything like this before.
"But to win just left me in a kind of joy-induced trance."
The play tells the story of a dark, futuristic city and centres around a private detective.
Now, spurred on by his national acclaim, Daniel is planning to write a whole series.
"It is pretty surreal," he said. "I am getting started on the first series and the BBC have said they will have a look at it."
And it was that awards ceremony which propelled Daniel into a new direction. He had to make an acceptance speech in front of stars such as comedian Lenny Henry and veteran actor Sylvester McCoy as well as a raft of soap stars.
"I hadn't really prepared a speech because I didn't expect to win," Daniel said.
