“DANCING” Ken Hanks has announced he will stand in the upcoming General Election as the Monster Raving Loony Party’s Cheltenham candidate.

The popular fundraiser, who is believed to have raised more than £1 million for good causes over the last 50 years, stood in the 2005 election and polled 525 votes. The result put him just behind UKIP’s 608 votes, but was less than the five per cent slice of the poll required to recover his £500 deposit.

Among the policies included in the party’s manifesto five years ago were 99p coins “to save on change” and refusing to sign up to the Euro but inviting the rest of Europe to adopt the pound. Mr Hanks will take part in a debate with Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood, prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate Mark Coote and prospective Labour parliamentary candidate James Green at the University of Gloucestershire tonight. Organised by public relations student Diana Urbaite, the event is open to members of the public

The debate will be held at The Park campus lecture theatre from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

“Get rid of the royal family and put Ken in the big house, then when we go to the opera, we can stay in one of the spare rooms.”
