Danger road action call
ACTION is needed over a dangerous stretch of the A46 near Tewkesbury, according to a Conservative councillor.
Adrian Hardman, who represents Bredon on Worcestershire County Council and Wychavon District Council, said he was alarmed at figures he had just obtained.
They showed there had been nine serious accidents, including two fatal ones, between the Evesham bypass and Beckford over the last three years. He said he had written to the Government about the issue.

“So 9 serious accidents (2 of them fatal) over a 3-year period makes a road dangerous? Hmm, I wonder. How many hundreds of thousands of vehicle movements occurred along that same stretch of road over the same 3 year period? We're talking very small fractions of a percent of total traffic along the road. What is the figure for accidents to vehicle movements that defines a road as being "dangerous", or an "accident blackspot"?
Having seen the figures, I wonder if Cllr. Hardman has also seen the accident investigation reports into these 9 serious accidents? How many have been confirmed as being as a result of the "dangerous road", or otherwise?
What does Cllr. Hardman want to see done? If all of the accidents were caused by the road, then he might have a point. If however other factors were the main contributory factor (e.g. driver error / speeding / dangerous driving etc, adverse weather, mechanical failure, etc.) then the road isn't at fault, and isn't any more dangerous than most other roads.
From what is reported, this Cllr. has reacted to a number on a page. Perhaps TiG could do a follow-up on the 9 serious accidents referenced, to establish what the cause/s were for each. Then it might be clearer if the road is a problem, or not.”
