LYDNEY's revival continued with their third consecutive win following a 22-17 battering of Shelford, writes Chris Wilson.

The spirit engendered in their previous two games was on show in abundance as the Severnsiders came back from 17-3 down in a superb display.

Stand-off Danny Trigg once again to the fore as he collected a try, two conversions and a penalty in another fine showing.

The opening minutes were played in Lydney's 22 and Shelford had a try disallowed for offside after a clearance was charged down.

It was no surprise that they took the lead with a Steve Smith penalty after Lydney were caught not releasing in the tackle, but Trigg levelled within eight minutes.

Shelford's pack were working well and a straightforward catch and drive move from a penalty lineout brought Dane Grey the game's first try, converted by Smith, after 21 minutes.

Lydney were penalised for going off their feet but Shelford spurned their chance of further points.

However, when Adam Ledner was shown a yellow card for pulling down a maul Shelford quickly extended their lead with a carbon copy try to their first, this time Nigel Conroy was driven over and Smith added the goal.

The Severnsiders hit back with a fine try started by a short pass from Ben Lewis to put Matt Taylor through and when he was tackled, Tony Wicks dummied over from the next phase. Trigg did the rest from out wide.

Lydney's confidence surged with that try and Wicks stepped past sprawling tacklers to take play into the Shelford half before Mike Dodge made an exciting break up the wing only for the concession of a penalty to halt the momentum.

With the last kick of the half Trigg had a chance to cut the deficit to four points but pushed his kick just wide.

The home side started the second period with purpose and camped on the Shelford line. The visitors held out but lost Scott Jackowski to the sin bin.

Finally Lydney's persistence paid off as Trigg scrambled over out wide with Shelford stretched to breaking point. Trigg added the goal to tie the scores.

And with a ferocious charge in the final five minutes, Lydney forced Shelford's back three into a mistake and from the scrum their pack were steadily shunted back over their own line for the winning try.

Any chance Shelford had of snatching victory ended when number eight Aki Lea was sin-binned for foul play with two minutes left.

Lydney almost put the icing on the cake with a bonus point but after Trigg broke through the middle supported by Josh Innes, Dodge was crowded out in the corner.
