Former Stroud MP David Drew has been picked to fight for his old seat by Labour members in the town.

Mr Drew, who served as the town's MP for 13 years from 1997 to 2010, was given "overwhelming" support at a meeting of the CLP on Friday, where he comfortably beat challengers Jo McCarron and Victoria Powell.

He will now launch his campaign in the hope of winning back the seat from Conservative Neil Carmichael, who took it with a wafer-thin majority in May last year.

“David was selected by Labour Party members in the whole of Stroud constituency, not just in Stroud town. The constituency covers a large area from Hardwicke and Cranham in the north to Dursley and Nailsworth in the south, Frampton and Sharpness in the west and Oakridge and Bisley in the east (and Stonehouse in the middle!).”
