Cinderford RFC: Deacon trying to keep feet on the floor

REALISTIC Cinderford director of rugby Andy Deacon is refusing to get carried away with his side's early table-topping position in National One.

The Foresters have picked up two consecutive bonus-point wins at Cambridge and at home to Coventry on Saturday in their opening two fixtures to go ahead of everyone else.

But Deacon says there is a long way to go in the season and does not want anyone diverting from their thorough preparations ahead of the trip to Rosslyn Park tomorrow.

"I am too much of a realist, and there are another 28 games to go, but the club is in a very buoyant state at the minute," said former Gloucester prop Deacon.

"Half the job at the minute is meeting people's expectations or calming people's expectations. There are a lot of difficult sides in the league who will be tough to beat, including this week against Rosslyn Park.

"We have a good squad and the fact we have scored what we have scored, and got five points from each game, will only give us confidence to go forward into Rosslyn Park and beyond.

"It is a nice feeling and makes the job a lot easier.

" But at the same time, I am making sure everyone keeps their feet on the ground and works hard and does what we do well.

"We have always been a hard-working side and one that will be well prepared. If we just keep doing that, then hopefully we will maintain where we are."

The Dockham Road men showed great character to work back from 31-14 down in their first home game of the season against former Championship outfit Coventry.

They displayed equally impressive characteristics against Cambridge in their curtain raiser to race into the lead and hold off a resurgent fight back from the Volac Park men.

Deacon says there is still plenty to work on but he is pleased to be at the other end of the table after lying bottom this time last year following double defeats.

"Coventry are a traditional rugby club and were a good scalp for us and now we sit top of the table whereas this time last year we were bottom of the table," he added.

"Over the two games there are things we can work on especially through the forward area.

"But we have managed to work on them and still picked up ten points which is better than zero which is what we had last year."
