CINDERFORD Director of Rugby Andy Deacons' weekly column:

IT WAS interesting to see a unique result on Saturday with the two major university sides in the country losing, Loughborough and Hartpury.

Speaking of Hartpury, congratulations to Mark Cornwell for his new coaching role in the Hartpury set-up and having full reign of the forwards and defensive responsibility.

I played and worked with him at Gloucester and Cinderford and he is a longstanding friend and I wish him well.

It is a nice signing for Hartpury and with his experiences at Gloucester, hopefully he will have an empathy with the local rugby culture as well.

Players at Hartpury who are not getting game time must forge links with local combination clubs on a Saturday afternoon so we maximise every single player in the county.

If there is a talented student at the college, in Gloucestershire for three years, then let him have a career outside of Hartpury.

This plays to one of Mark's strengths along with his vast analytical coaching experience.

Cinderford were up against another old face last weekend, Chris Fortey, when we played Stourbridge.

He was very disappointed with the result after we won 25-18 at their ground.

I have put my arm around Chris many times in the scrum at Gloucester and it was interesting to see the other side of the coin, with his coaching hat on, and his reaction to defeat.

It must be a very frustrating time for him as he tries to lead the players and fix the errors, but that is coaching and you have to live with that.

It will come over time and his experience will come through and I am sure he will have a good coaching career after he finishes professionally at Worcester Warriors.

Coaching at Stourbridge will give him that base to work from.

In our division there are a few old players involved and I would welcome playing Mark if Hartpury come up.

I would welcome a true local derby and the revenue and interest, that is what it is all about.

We have not got much of that and we have to travel quite far afield for games and it just shows our professionalism at the club in making that happen seamlessly.

On another note, Cinderford are looking for a doctor for homes matches on Saturday afternoons.

Our current doctor is unable to commit to all our home fixtures due to professional requirements, so we don't need a full-time resource, someone to share the rota, so to speak.

You will get entry into the ground and can watch the game and perform the requirements of a doctor.

Please get in touch.

SELECT WOOD FOR ENGLAND, GRAHAM

HAVING propped against Graham Rowntree for many years, I played against Leicester more times than any other club.

The majority of those were against Graham and I regard him as a friend and a quality coach and who has survived the recent England traumas.

He was the one coach who has been retained, which is credit to him, but I would say to him, 'You seriously got it wrong with Nick Wood mate'.

If there is any way you can fit Nick Wood into your squad then you should be doing it quite soon.

I support Stuart Lancaster and Graham in what they are trying to do and the players they pick, but Nick Wood has to play for England sooner rather than later.

Nick is in the form of his life and he could quite easily play international rugby tomorrow.

If he can't maintain that form then he will miss his chance.

He is a lovely lad and a good Gloucester kid and works hard and deserves his chance.

I was watching the game on Saturday night and people were saying he is a scrummaging loosehead but has to be more dynamic in the loose.

If I was Bryan Redpath I would send the DVD to Stuart Lancaster after the Bath game and say, 'How much more dynamic does he have to be?'

He was unreal in everything he did, he turned ball over, he defended well, and he stuffed them in the scrum.

There was not a lot more you could do and it was a perfect prop performance in a great game, I thought, for Gloucester.

That is what rugby is all about, it was a bit wet but blood guts and thunder and Bryan would be very happy with the attitude of players and the skills.

DIAMOND BAN WAS RIOGHT AND PROPER

I JUST want to recap on something that I touched on in a recent column with regards to Steve Diamond berating Wayne Barnes.

It was good to see that he has been handed an 18-week ban and a £4,000 fine because it sends out the correct message from the RFU that they will not tolerate such behaviour.

We have seen in other sports, mainly the round ball one, if they don't get it right at the top it filters down to the grass roots.

If you are trying to stamp out petulance towards the referee with this sort of punishment for Diamond, I think it sends out the right message.

It was quite a severe, unique situation which they needed to stamp out.

Diamond said Barnes was late for the arrival of the game, that he was out of condition and did not have a handle on the game.

But it is their job at the end of the day, they are not doing it for recreation, and Wayne Barnes is a high-class referee.

Yes he is going to make mistakes, he is only human, but he has to have clarity of thought and experience, and as a lawyer he is clearly an intelligent guy.

This was the right thing to happen.
