GIANT striker Tom Denton wants to make a big impact during his loan spell with Cheltenham Town.

The teenager stands close to 6ft 6ins tall and looks set to surpass Julian Alsop as the tallest player to represent the Robins in the Football League.

Denton has agreed a six-month temporary deal at Cheltenham from Huddersfield Town, who he joined on a two-and-a-half year contract after being plucked from non-League club Wakefield last summer.

He spent three months with Blue Square Premier club Woking last term, scoring twice in three league starts, and now has a chance to impress at League Two level.

"Huddersfield are happy to let me come out and get some football and I was very keen to come to Cheltenham. It should be a good move," said Denton, who turns 20 next week.

"I was looking to go out and get some games, which is better than playing reserve team football, and it's a good club and a good place to be."

Huddersfield-born Denton will be lodging in the Robins' new club house along with Elvis Hammond and Barry Hayles.

He looked a threat in Tuesday's 0-0 friendly draw with Southampton and was given a warm reception from the home fans when he was substituted in the second half.

His aerial presence is clearly his primary asset, but Denton insists there is more to his game then winning headers.

"I hope I gave a good account of myself and the fans were good to me," he said. "I had a few nice touches, laying a few off, and there were a few knock-downs too. Heading is my game, but if I can get a few goals with my feet as well I will be happy.

"A target man always makes a difference when balls go into the box and I want to get into the side and get some games now.

"Last year I learned a lot from Andy Booth at Huddersfield, so I will have to see if I can follow in his footsteps as he is a top professional."

Denton may also learn a trick or two about how to act as a target man from fellow non-League graduate Alsop, who is close to agreeing non-contract terms with the Robins.

Cheltenham play Bristol City at the Abbey Business Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

You knock the North but what does Cheltenham have to offfer weak Whitbread beer, dripping cakes, poodle owners and a team destined for the Conference - use some intelligence and realise real football players are Northerm born and breed.”
