Doctor helping people overcome addictions dies
A DEDICATED doctor who was passionate about treating people dealing with addiction has died.
Dr Simon McMinn has passed away at the age of 67 following a short illness on August 23.

He moved to the town with his family in 1975 when he joined the Yorkleigh Surgery in St George's Road, remaining there until his retirement as a senior partner in 2011. During his career, Dr McMinn developed an interest in treating addiction and in 1992 he became chairman of the Alcohol Counselling and Information Service , later becoming part of the Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Service.
Dr McMinn also became a member of the county's Substance Misuse Shared Care Monitoring Group in 2003 as well as running the Hester's Way Drug Addiction Clinic from 2002.

His family described Dr McMinn said: "He was a driver, an initiator and a visionary: not only did he see what could be done, he made it happen."
Born on in Herne Bay, Kent, he served on a Short Service Commission for the RAF from 1970 before moving to Cheltenham.
He was prison doctor for HMP Gloucester for the last six years, treating the general health and the addictions of prisoners.
In 1996, Dr McMinn was co-founder of Chelt-DOC, a GP out of hours service.
He also volunteered for Combat Stress to help ex-servicemen.
Dr McMinn is survived by his wife Gill and daughters Rachel, Clare and Melanie.
A memorial service will be held on October 5, at 3pm, at St Stephen's Church in St Stephen's Road.
