SINGER Pete Doherty has been released on £50,000 bail ahead of a trial in Gloucester.

The 30-year-old rock star was bailed after appearing before Stroud magistrates yesterday charged with driving dangerously, while drunk, and in possession of heroin.

He whooped with delight as he heard the news that he was free to leave the court.

Kate Moss' former lover was arrested in the early hours of Thursday in Derby Road in Gloucester.

The former Babyshambles frontman had just played a gig at the Guildhall.

The ex-Libertine's barrister, Peter Ratcliffe, indicated that Doherty would be pleading not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving during the short hearing in Stroud.

But Doherty, 30, then entered guilty pleas to two offences of drugs possession and to having no licence or insurance, all on June 11.

Around 0.02oz (0.6g) of heroin, worth around £35, was allegedly found in the car, while some 15 wraps of the drug, worth up to £300, were discovered in a search of his country home in Durley, near Marlborough.

He entered no plea to the drink-driving allegation.

Doherty, also spoke to confirm, his age and address.

His manager, Andrew Boyd, put up the £50,000 surety which will be forfeited if Doherty jumps bail.

Mr Ratcliffe said Doherty felt he had let his loyal fans down.

He said: '"My client would firstly like to express his disappointment in himself and disappointed that he has let his fans down.

"'He has been out of trouble for over a year and a break of 14 months represents a real achievement for someone with a drug dependency.

"'This offence represents an aberration. There has been a very real and very significant change in his behaviour."

Prosecuting, Sharon Jomaa urged the court to refuse bail on the grounds of his "serious" addiction.

She said: "He has failed to show for a hearing on a previous occasion in 2007, and has serious drug uses problems which are a concern.

"He currently has a £100-a-day heroin addiction."

Despite her objections, Doherty was granted bail with several conditions.

Chairman of the bench Christopher Weaver explained that those conditions were to live at his home address in Wiltshire and to obey a curfew order from 7pm to 7am. But when gigging, the conditions will not apply, Mr Weaver told him.

He is also not to travel in the front seat of any vehicle and will be fitted with a medical implant "to attempt to prevent drug abuse".

He is forbidden from using illegal substances while on bail and must attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings at least once a week.
