GLOUCESTER CITY boss Dave Mehew has urged fans not to panic over the team's lack of a goalkeeper.

He said his first-choice replacement for Kevin Sawyer was still lined up, but would not be drawn on the name of the new player.

He said: "Don't panic, it is all in hand. There are reasons why we can't say who he is at the moment but we don't have a game until July 14.

"I am not going to rush into anything just for the sake of it.

"We have Ollie Hall for training and we might not need a keeper for some of the sessions.

"I have a couple of back-ups in mind and am in the process of sorting out a second keeper."

With the squad back in training on Monday, Mehew is looking forward to testing out a selection of trial players.

These look set to include Ledbury's Dorin Collin, former Cirencester Town and Swindon Town winger Dan Wallington, Hartpury and Forest Green Rovers midfielder James Baldwin and his ex-Rovers team-mate Eddie James.

Mehew said: "A couple of young lads are coming up to see if they can progress.

"We might have a look at Steve Davis from Hartpury but he has been offered chances elsewhere.

"I have given the opportunity to come and impress and he has been recommended to me.

"There might be a few more, and the thing for these lads to remember is this time last year we didn't know who Jack Harris was.

"He came from nowhere and ended up scoring in the play-off semi final and played a lead role in the final."

Mehew said Alex Sykes was unavailable for the first few games and Tom Webb was not expected to be fully fit.

"Tom Hamblin has picked up a three-match ban," he said. "It was for the incident at Stourbridge which has come back to bite him on the behind."

Commenting on his place in the Non-League Paper's top-20 managers, Mehew said he was delighted to finish 18th.

"If I can still be in the top 20 next season I will be happy," he said.

"I don't want to be a one season wonder. It is nice to be recognised alongside people like Terry Brown who I watched play, people who have been doing it for decades."
