HUNDREDS of people relived the last days of Edward Wilson's life during an emotional concert in Cheltenham.

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville was on hand to narrate the commemoration in music, words and pictures of Captain Scott's epic adventure to the South Pole between 1910 and 1912.

Around 700 people headed to the town hall for the unusual concert staged by the City Of London Sinfonia orchestra.

Cheltenham's Edward Wilson was one of the men to take part in the ill-fated expedition, which claimed the lives of all the explorers.

Town hall spokesman Richard Batsford said: "It was very well received and there was an ovation at the end.

"It was a lot more atmospheric than a normal orchestra concert because of the narration, singing and pictures that were displayed."

Richard added Hugh Bonneville did a good job of conveying the way Scott revealed in his diaries how he retained a stiff upper lip despite knowing he and his team would perish.

The orchestra performed excerpts from Vaughan Williams' celebrated score to the 1948 film Scott of the Antarctic, interspersed with readings from Scott's final diaries. Original pictures by expedition photographer Herbert Ponting were also shown.
