A man who was killed in a dual carriageway crash with a lorry has been identified as a 63-year-old from Cirencester.

He died after colliding with the lorry on the A419, at Widhill House, near Cricklade, at 6am on Tuesday.

The man’s yellow Saab 93 was crushed under the back of the HGV, driven by a 60-year-old man from Huddersfield.

The Cirencester man, who was travelling south, died at the scene from head injuries.

A statement from Wiltshire police said: “A car travelling southbound collided with an articulated lorry outside Widhill Farm.

“The driver of the lorry has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was taken to Gablecross police station for questioning and later released on police bail.”

The road was closed for more than seven hours as the vehicles were removed and the serious collision investigation team examined the area.

Tailbacks of up to nine miles were reported before the route reopened at 3pm. Wiltshire police are appealing for witnesses, in particular the driver of another lorry overtaken by the Saab seconds before the collision, to call 0845 408 7000.
