The process for recruiting and appointing a successor for Mr Tripp is currently underway.
Until such appointment is made, Mr Tripp will continue to drive through the programme of changes and improvements already in hand in the company and prepare for a smooth handover to his successor.
Will Samuel, Chairman of the Ecclesiastical Board, said: “Michael’s achievements over the last six years have been considerable and have re-shaped Ecclesiastical for the future. Just as importantly, he has been an intensely committed leader to the company and modelled the qualities of personal integrity to which we all aspire.
“I want to thank Michael for his contribution to the board and company over the last six years and wish him a very happy retirement.”
The following changes to the Board of Ecclesiastical Insurance Group and the Board of AllChurches Trust have also been announced today:
After four years as Chairman of AllChurches Trust (ATL), the beneficial owner of the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group (EIG), Nick Sealy has announced his intention to retire in July 2013. Nick has been a director of ATL since 2003. The Board of ATL has identified Sir Philip Mawer as the Trust’s next Chairman. In the interim, Sir Philip will act as Deputy Chairman of ATL.
In consequence, Sir Philip will stand down as a non-executive director of EIG and EIO in February 2013. His role as Deputy Chairman of Ecclesiastical and its senior independent director will be filled by David Christie. Denise Wilson will be the new Chairman of the Remuneration Committee of the Board.
Arrangements are in hand to appoint two new non-executive directors to the Board of EIG. Further announcements will be made once the appointment process is complete.
In order to ensure proper handling of the distinction between the interests of EIG and of ATL as the owner of the company, and in accordance with principles of good corporate governance, Will Samuel (Chairman of EIG) will step down as a director of ATL with immediate effect.

“This is the right decision by the Ecclesiastical Board.
Michael Tripp comes accross as a nice guy but 6 years ago he inerited a profitable organisation with largely happy staff.
He will be leaving a loss making company with disillusioned staff. Sadly he and his executive colleagues - who are as much to blame as Tripp - have been found to be out of their depth and lacking in strategy. I decided to leave Ecclesiastical a couple of years ago as I lost faith in the leadership which was in place.
This is a pivotal moment for the Company. I still have a lot of good friends there and the Board have to make sure they get the right person in as replacement.
And don't hold your breath for the promised office move to the docks. If the strong rumours at Ecclesiastical are to be believed the Company have been scrutinising the contract they signed with the council to try find a way of backing out.”
