Elito hopes Cheltenham Town loan spell can lift prospects

MEDY Elito is hoping a successful loan spell with Cheltenham Town can thrust him back into Colchester United boss Aidy Boothroyd's plans.

The 19-year-old winger is set to make his second start for the Robins at Burton Albion tomorrow after a highly encouraging debut in last Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Chesterfield.

The left-footed Elito possesses skill and pace, and provided much-needed width for Cheltenham, who desperately need to increase their attacking potency if they are to stay above the relegation line over the next 12 matches.

"My game is about pace and width," Elito, who turned down the chance to join Manchester United in 2006, said.

"I was told I had to work on my defensive side at Colchester, but the gaffer here (Mark Yates) wants me to stay up and not track back.

"I like to attack defenders and getting balls in so hopefully I can show I am tough enough and help Cheltenham stay away from the relegation zone then go back and play more football at Colchester."

Elito is keen to impress not only to enhances his prospects at Colchester, but also his international chances.

He moved to England with his family from Zaire at the age of one.

He joined Colchester at the age of 16 after a successful trial and has gone on to represent England at Under-17, 18 and 19 level. He now has his eye on earning a call-up to Stuart Pearce's Under-21 set-up.

Elito has played alongside the likes of Manchester United starlets Danny Welbeck and Daniel Drinkwater as well as Everton pair Jack Rodwell and Danny Gosling and Wigan's Victor Moses.

"I am very happy to have been given the chance to play for England," he said.

"I have played with some very good players and I'd love to get back into it and play for the Under-21s."

Elito has worked under former Robins boss John Ward, who his now assistant to Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd.

"John Ward is a very good assistant coach and he lets you know what you have to do and boosts your confidence," he said.

"He tells me I need to add more end product, which is what I am trying to improve and he will be getting feedback from the gaffer here."
