Ellwood slip up in bid to chase down pacesetters
WITH the top two in cup action, Ellwood missed a chance to close the gap on the Gloucestershire County League leaders as they went down 1-0 at Thornbury Town.
In a competitive game at the Mundy Fields, the hosts had the first chance to open the scoring but Pete Fowler saw his header cleared off the line.
Tom Webb also saw a shot cleared off the line and Steve Alexander blasted the ball over before Thornbury took the lead a minute before the break.
Webb broke down the right and crossed to the far post where Mark Greenwood emphatically drove the ball into the net.

At the other end of the table, Longlevens eased any lingering fears of relegation back to the Northern Senior League as they thumped Henbury 4-0.
The home victory for the Red and Blacks saw them leap above DRG Frenchay and Taverners and sit a healthy nine points ahead of rock-bottom Berkeley Town.
The hosts had already had a goal chalked off for offside before taking the lead after nine minutes as Ed Smiley flicked home a cross from Mike Noakes.
Ex-Gloucester City winger Noakes added the second in the 28th minute, cutting inside from the left and sending a dipping shot over Ashley Newman and into the net.
Noakes made it three on 38 minutes, heading home from a great cross from Luke Kavanagh, while Lee Blackmore was denied a fourth by a fine Newman save.
After dominating the second half in much the same way as the first, Longlevens added a fourth through Brad Martin.
Martin missed a glorious chance to make it five late in the game, but he just failed to control a ball over the top and a relieved Newman gathered.
Frampton United claimed a terrific away 2-1 win at Hanham Athletic, goals from Steve Jackson and Lee Driver-Dickerson sealing the points.
Jackson tapped home from a good move after 20 minutes while Driver-Dickerson smashed home from the penalty spot on 55 minutes.
Josh Dakwa bagged a consolation goal for Hanham, but Frampton were not to be denied the victory.
Bishop's Cleeve Reserves came away from the Filton Wise Campus with a hard-earned point as the Villagers halted Bristol Academy's charge to the top.
Jordan Lawrence put the students in front on 38 minutes, tapping home after a cross caught the Villagers defence out.
But a superb equaliser from Jamie Lock ten minutes into the second half saw Cleeve claim a share of the spoils.
