English tests for foreign doctors
Foreign doctors will have to prove their English is up to scratch before being allowed to treat NHS patients.
The government confirmed there will be a legal duty from April for doctors from abroad to show they have the necessary grasp of the language.
Concerns were raised after a German doctor, Dr Daniel Ubani, gave a patient a fatal overdose on his first and only shift in the UK.
He had earlier been rejected for work because of poor English skills.

“Fluency in English should be the minimum level considering the risks involved.”

“Some nurses could use English lessons as well, it is not uncommon to be trying to convey something and watch the expression and body language which is clearly hearing the words, translating to another language then considering an answer which then needs translating into English before speaking it. But being fair to them they have better capability in English than I have in French and German even after trying hard.”

“This should have been done years ago. How on earth can foreign doctors treat us properly if they can't even understand what we say. They should go through intensive English lessons. I have just completed a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course which took me 1 year to do, & it is very involved - trying to teach English to people when their first language is not English, & it's not something they can just pick up!”
