RUSS Penn has been inundated with text messages from Birmingham City and West Brom fans telling him what a good signing Darren Carter will be for Cheltenham Town.

Stourbridge-based midfielder Penn, a supporter of West Brom's Black Country rivals Wolves, knows all about Carter's talents having seen him play on television numerous times.

But he didn't expect to have a chance to line-up alongside the 28-year-old, who signed a six-month deal with the Robins last week.

"Darren is a great lad who has already looked sharp in training and I have watched him on TV so I know a lot about him and he's another good signing from the gaffer," Penn said.

"Being around the Midlands you hear the news and I have a lot of Blues fans as mates.

"Darren is a big name around our area and I have had plenty of messages saying he's a good player.

"I haven't given him any stick for being an ex-Baggies player yet, but I am sure that'll come."

Carter has given boss Mark Yates another option, with Penn, Marlon Pack and Sam Deering his other frontline midfielders and Jeff Goulding also able to play in the advanced role in behind the central striker.

Carter has battled back from a torn adductor muscle and he replaced Penn in the 66th minute.

It was typical of Penn that he wanted the teams to stay on the pitch during the first half deluge which led to a 15-minute hold-up in play.

"I didn't want to come off because it was warm, the pitch was good and we were playing well," Penn said.

"I can understand the decision with lightning around and we couldn't really see much. We went in, rinsed out our tops and saved the spare kit for the second half, but it was definitely an experience."
