Ex-PCSO arrested in Indonesia on drug smuggling charges
FORMER Gloucestershire PCSO Andrea Waldeck has appeared in court in Indonesia on drug smuggling charges.
Waldeck, 43, who is believed to have lived in Gloucester while working for the county force, is accused of smuggling 1.47kg of crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of £3,000.
She was arrested in her hotel room in Surabaya, Indonesia, in April. If found guilty she could be executed by firing squad.
Surabaya District Court heard police followed Waldeck out of Surabaya's international airport after receiving a tip that she was carrying the drugs.
The drugs were allegedly found concealed in four plastic packages inside her underwear.
Prosecutor Deddy Agus Oktavianto said Waldeck, who was living in Rustington, West Sussex, claimed her boyfriend in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou had asked her to traffic the drugs in exchange for $5,000.
A spokesman for the British embassy in Jakarta said: "We can confirm the detention of a British national in Surabaya. We are providing consular assistance."
A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire police said: "We are aware that a former member of police staff has been arrested in Indonesia. She left the employment of Gloucestershire Constabulary in February 2012." On a Facebook page set up for Waldeck in July, she wrote: "My new, very private profile for the friends and family I love and miss so much. Your support means the world to me. I'm so very sorry I've disappointed you all.
"Can't change my name or delete pics from this phone or answer messages individually but only my Facebook friends can see this.
"Please don't worry, this is Indonesia and some have prison staff as friends. And to all who want to help, I'm told my bro is coming out to see me soon. It would help if he could bring books and clothes. I'm a size 34 out here. Is it a 14 or a 16? Very lightweight cotton if possible cause it's melting hot here and need to be handwashed. X"
Her trial will resume next week.
The case comes as another Gloucestershire woman, Lindsay Sandiford, continues to fight against her death sentence for smuggling 4.8kg (10.6lb) of cocaine, into the Indonesian island of Bali.
The 57-year-old from Cheltenham lost her latest appeal.
Waldeck worked as a PCSO in Up Hatherley.
