EXPLOSIONS, smoke grenades, rapid fire and armoured tanks are what you would expect from most war zones.

But in this case it formed part of the training of Gloucestershire Reserves in a wet and windy German battlefield as they prepared to be deployed over the next year to serve their country.

The scenario at Borkenberge training camp in North Germany saw the volunteers from 6 Rifles taking part on the two-week Exercise Leopard Star, which saw 110 riflemen training in conventional warfare including FIWAF (firing in woods and forests), planning and carrying out ambushes on the enemy, and executing camp attacks as well as working with the army’s new Warrior tank.
