FACEBOOK users avoided the site in their thousands last month as research suggests people are falling out of love with the social media juggernaut.

Around 600,000 of the estimated 33 million users in the UK did not log on to the site in December.

Research group Socialbakers believes the site will reach "full penetration" in the UK unless it allows under-13s to join.

Facebook says it is continuing to recruit new members in the country, after reaching the milestone of a billion users worldwide last year.

“Thanks JASB999! Guess what? In all the time I've been using this site I never even noticed that "Most Commented" tab! Is it new? Not much use though – it isn't working – at least not for THIS article!”

“Hi Geraint OK fair point - I also like the comments and am amused by some of the comments and problably for the same reason you state.

I wasn't aware that TiG wasn't prioritising articles with the most comments - I thought the tab most commented did that...”

    “Hi JASB999!

Don't get me wrong, the CONCEPT of the site is excellent and I appreciate the opportunity to add my input . More especially I enjoy reading other readers' opinions (even - no especially -when I disagree with them!), as these are often more interesting and entertaining than the articles to which they refer. That said CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is a positive thing and the fact that at least 10 readers gave me the green arrow surely speaks for itself? No doubt I'm wasting my time though as this comment, along with your reply should you bother, is unlikely to seen by anyone due to TIG's apparent new policy of no longer prioritising articles attracting multiple comments.”

“Ha Geraint2010 if you don't like this FREE site why do you keep posting comments?”

“The bit that annoys me about people complaining Facebook is full of show offs, moaners, attention seekers etc. is that actually, those are the people that you actually KNOW (or at least claim to know). These are your "friends", they are there because YOU added/accepted them. Facebook is essentially what you make it. Choose not to add annoying people and those people will not be able to annoy you.”

“I find Faceache is full of people showing off at how many holidays they can go on & activities they do at weekends - I cannot understand why they want everyone to see their dreadfully boring holiday pictures!

It's also seems to be a way of showing how popular you (think) you are by getting 100's of people they hardly know to become their 'friends' when in reality they aren't really liked by half of 'em!”

“I don't know about Facebook, but people are falling out of love with a local news site where persists a dearth of very much newsworthy and where the few articles that are attracting readers' feedback are no longer prioritised and quickly disappear off the radar.”

“''Full penetration''? Ahem. Normally that would sit comfortably in the above sentence. By highlighting it though TiG, I feel you've made it a tad sordid?
My double entendres detector could have noticed it without your help!”
