IT HAS been tough for Howard Webb's wife and children to piece their lives back together since that fateful afternoon in June 2010.

Michelle Webb says she will always be haunted by the moments leading up to his death, in which he unleashed a savage physical attack on her before running off with a kitchen knife.

He went on to stab himself in the heart in a nearby street as he fled from police.

Michelle, now 33, says she and her five children – three of them by Howard – have tried to put the tragic events of that summer's day behind them.

After the findings of yesterday's inquest she told the Echo she was still left with unanswered questions about what triggered the man she had once loved to behave in such a crazed manner.

"I'm afraid we will never know now," she said.

"The only person who knows the reasons why he did what he did is Howard and he has taken them with him."

Michelle admitted she was still angry with her former husband for abandoning the family in such brutal circumstances.

She said: "You can never forget something like that. What he did was terrible and it still makes me angry.

"But I have mixed feelings when I think of Howard because we did have some good times together. Sometimes I think about being on holiday together with the kids and the happier times we had.

"But I've still got clear memories of the last time I saw him and they will never completely go away.

"And when I think of the kids I can't understand how he could have left them.

"He has missed out on so much."

Michelle married Howard in 2005 and the couple had three children – Aidan, now seven, Kayne, five, and Larissa, four.

She also had two other children, Maxine, now 14, and Ethan, 10, by other partners.

She still lives in the family home she shared with him in Mersey Street, together with her large family.

But she has removed any photographs of Howard and redecorated the interior of the house where it all began in a bid to make a clean break with the past.

The only picture of him which remains is inside a locket which she still wears around her neck.

The full-time mum added: "Most of the kids were too young to really understand what happened.

"When they ask me about their dad I just say he was angry, he did something silly, and now he's gone to sleep.

"I don't want them to be scarred by what happened so it's the best thing I can say.

"We've all just got to do our best to put it behind us and get on with life."

“The Echo article suggests that might be the answer. Strange that we have two versions of a Cheltenham story, and can only comment on the Citizen one: http://tinyurl.com/9lhuevb

“Night terrors/ sleepwalking? The case wouldn't be without precedent.”
