A FAMILY of eight living in a three-bedroom home in Cinderford say they have been refused simple solutions to their cramped lifestyle.

Joanne and Scot Jenkins-Pugh live with their four young kids and Joanne's parents at the Two Rivers Housing property in Latimer Road.

  1. Joanne Jenkins-Pugh, 26, with mum Carole, 55 and children Luca, Alex, Chace and Kloe

Scot and Joanne sleep in the dining room with baby daughter Kloe and their son Alex, five, is the only person in the house not sharing a bedroom, sleeping in a box room.

The family don't want to move but have instead asked Two Rivers about having an extension built, to be told, they say, the housing association doesn't do such work.

Their next-door neighbour is also soon to move out and suggested they explore the possibility of knocking the houses together but again the family said Two Rivers refused.

"They told us they don't do extensions for anyone or knock-throughs but we've since heard they have done exactly that for other people," said Joanne, 26.

"We just want the best quality of life for our kids we can give them. Scot works full-time, I get child benefits which I use solely for the kids, we are not sitting here doing nothing."

Joanne has lived in the house since she was born.

They have had adaptations to make life easier for Alex, who has mobility problems.

Joanne said they were "riled" by Heather Frost's situation, the Churchdown mum-of-11 who is living in two houses knocked together while she waits for a purpose-built, taxpayer funded six-bed home in Tewkesbury to be finished. It's frustrating, it just seems it's different rules for different people," she said.

Two Rivers said Mr and Mrs Jenkins-Pugh and their four grandchildren had recently moved into Joanne's parents' home.

Sue Wilson, neighbourhood housing co-ordinator, said: "If they consider that the house is too small for them all, then they need to make an application through the Homeseekers system."

She said the system ensures that all applications for homes are dealt with according to need.

“Don't you think the family have looked into that already the only 5 bedroom houses are well out of the area to the point that they would have to relocate the children into a new school all the family is trying to do is show just how unfair 2 rivers are with the fact that they through all the help at people who dont work and dont need it but won't help the ones who do or the ones who are trying to help themselves. 2 rivers have only said that they can not buy the house simply because they know what the family will do to it and I for one can not see how they can do that because if it is no longer their property how can they dictate what can or can not be done to it as I have already said the family have looked at everything they can think of and when they read that yet another person who dont work gets what they want it was another smack in the mouth for them as they family have been waiting for a house of their own since they was expecting their first child who will be 9 this year. 3 years ago they then started looking at different options but have been refused.”

“I understand their reasons for wanting to stay...but if Two Rivers have said no, do you really think taking it public is the way that's going to make them say yes? I don't because if they say yes now, that sets an example that everyone else will follow by 'I they say no, take it public and they'll say yes".

I know families where the children have been forced out of the only home they have known(including children with autism) due to the recession and not being able to afford their accommodation and stuff. Yes it was more challenging than just a couple of adults moving, but they made sure the children's rooms were fully decorated and furnished before they moved to minimize the impact of the new environmentand made them aware they could talk to them any time they felt dad about the move. Not saying it won't be hard, just that this happens quite frequently, and people just have to deal with it then, so why not now?

As to us all not knowing the family, surely that makes us more objective?'?

I undersrand the system favours certain groups. What about all those people who are 'not disabled enough' to claim benefit under the new benefits rules, yet won't be allowed to claim job seekers benefits under the new system as they are not 'fit for work, and therefore unable to actively seek work'? They lack of fairness around is everywhere, all of us have to suck it in, find a new solution and move forward with that. If they are in a position where they have the ability to buy, they are in a better position than me (with no kids) and I, like many of my friends, am forced to rent privately....that's all I am saying, if they can afford it, like many others in the same/similar situations, they should rent privately!”

“Well if you know the family that well you would know what they have put their neighbours through then won't you. But there again your probably ignorant to that. And if you have read the article and comments you would know that the reason why they have done this is because of them wanting to buy the property but 2 rivers not allowing them because they know what the family want todo to the property. Yet 2 rivers allow others to buy their houses and build on to them and they have also built on to houses using tax payers money but they won't allow a family to build on to theirs using their hard earned money. And if thats the case where do you get off having ago at Joanne if you dint even know her let alone meet her or even been the house. Don't you think the way that 2 rivers treat their tenants different and the fact that people who sit on the ass all day can get everything they won't. And if thats the case you should get all your facts straight before you run your mouth. I stand up for what's right and if people have ago at Joanne when they dint even know her or know all the facts then I will. Alex has autism so needs to stay within an environment that he knows and understands plus all the children know that the house they are in is home thats why they dont want to move but improve the home they are in how is that wrong. And what do I do got anything to do with you nothing you know its called being a family and family means sticking together”

“Firstly I suggest you check who it is you are actually talking to as I am not related to the people you've carelessly ranted about, in any shape or form and actually feel very sorry for them. Secondly, if you don't like negative comments then don't draw attention to yourselves and thirdly, by reading all your comments, it seems you log in quite a lot just to defend your family when what you are actually doing is stripping them of any bit of dignity they have left. This article has angered a lot of people. What I don't understand is even if your family were able to claim the house next door, why knock it through? why not just live next door?”

“I don't sympathise at all. This family aren't all they make out to be. They are disgusting bullies who live in a very untidy house. Health issues? tidy up the mess and get rid of the junk. Overcrowded? I have never known anyone to get married and start a family under your own parents roof. That is shameful to complain that the house is overcrowded when you made it overcrowded and it wasn't even your house to begin with. They complain they need more room but don't want to move to a bigger house yet think they have the right to report other families and good honest people who keep themselves to themselves, in the area to get them kicked out of their own homes. Oh and we must not forget how the neighbourhood has to be extremely quiet while the kids are napping during the day. Again if you have a dog that barks to defend it's territory then you have to move house or put the dog down. More than a joke. Makes me sick!!!!!”
