Famous aviator Amy makes flying visit to Tewkesbury Garage
THE lady leaning on the car at Tewkesbury Garage is Amy Johnson, the famous aviator. At the time the picture was taken in the late 1930s/early 1940s, she lived at Stoke Orchard.
When not setting world records for long-distance flying in her Tiger Moth, Amy Johnson was the editor of a motoring magazine for women. Perhaps this is why she visited the garage in Tewkesbury.
Among the brands advertised above the fuel pumps is Power Petrol, no longer a familiar name.
The car (an Austin?) has the Gloucestershire number plate DDD 255.
