Farmers need support this awful season
AT last, we had a show – Frampton Country Fair– which was not cancelled because of appalling weather conditions.
In fact, the weather was perfect, attracting thousands of visitors but causing, alas, huge traffic jams. As ever, the whole day was packed with events, shopping opportunities and a chance to meet friends.
I had a stand promoting local beer and produce. We had three excellent beers from Stroud Brewery, chutneys from Selsley, savouries and sweets from Flavoursome and mustards from the Kitchen Garden. There were tasting sessions for all the products. Uley Brewery, too, was involved. Thank you to these excellent local businesses.
Naturally, the harvest conditions featured in many conversations. Farmers are still struggling with the consequences of some of the wettest summer weather on record and this will all have an impact on cereal quality and prices, not least because harvesting in the United States and Russia is also very disappointing.

It was, therefore, fortunate to have Julie Girling MEP on the stand to provide a perspective from the European Parliament, especially with the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy still a matter of robust bargaining between member states. Julie represents the whole of the South West but often focuses on Gloucestershire and has already been massively helpful to many of my constituents.
Another key theme was law and order. Vicky Atkins also came to the fair in her capacity as a candidate for the critical role of Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire.
Often I am asked by residents about policing and allocation of police resources but from 15 November, when the Commissioner is elected, there will be direct and effective democratic control over our police forces. This will give local people the capacity to influence the priorities of our police officers.
