Fast finish seals title
THE Chester Marathon incorporated the Welsh Championships.
Gloucester AC's ultra runner Jeremy Mower stepped down in distance for a rare outing at the marathon – his first for three years.
The first mile was run mostly on Chester Racecourse through wet grass, followed by several hills, but it levelled out and Mower reached half-marathon distance in one hour, 24 minutes, 58 seconds in about 50th position.
Mower was confident that his strength from ultra running would take him through the field in the second half of the race.

Gradually he caught others and a few athletes dropped out ahead of him as the course and the weather surprisingly got quite hot for the runners.
The final three miles had two large hills, the second of which Mower took steadily knowing he had the Welsh Masters over-45 title in the bag.
He dropped two places overall, but with his well-known finishing speed he regained those places in the final run-in.
Mower finished 34th overall out of 2,066 finishers in a time of two hours, 51 minutes and 31 seconds.
He was awarded the Welsh Masters over-45 title to cap off a good season in which, under the guidance of coach and former top marathoner Bob Cytlau, he has regained the speed he had several years ago to add to his endurance.
