"These days men are told to put on pinnies and chase after the children which is wonderful for women.

"But they like to fantasise about strong men coming in and sweeping them away."

Stores have reported the book being whipped off the shelves by all ages and it is now officially the UK's fastest selling paperback of all time – beating Harry Potter.

Since the book's release at the end of April, WH Smith in Eastgate Street has sold 222 copies and 561 copies of the trilogy.

Store manager Jon Newman said: "We have been selling out every day. I have never seen anything like it.

"It's phenomenal."

Waterstones in Eastgate Street said it has sold 328 copies of the book and almost 600 copies of the trilogy which is "unprecedented amounts".

Bex Kelly, from Waterstones, said: "Twilight was huge but that was a slow-burn success whereas this has been immediate."

The book is actually fan fiction written by British author EL James.

Its two lead characters were based also on Edward and Bella. It features the relationship between college graduate, Anastasia Steele and young business magnate, Christian Grey.

The second and third volumes are titled Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. They have attracted attention for the explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of bondage.

Universal has snapped up the film rights and rumours are now flying about who will star in the planned film.

Some of Hollywood's hottest stars, including Ryan Gosling and Scarlett Johansson, have been tipped for the roles.

“If they do make a film and cast Kristen Stewart in the lead role at least they will end up with an actress as wooden as the writing.”

“Has anyone actually read any of this book? I read a few pages the other day (someone at work had a copy) and the writing was so cliched and poor that it made my eyes bleed. Avoid.”

“Pornography for women: Harmless, racy, erotic, steamy, appealing to the inner yearning, phenomenal.

Pornography for men: Disgusting, harmful, debased, lurid, sordid, seedy, perverted, dehumanising, objectifying.

You've got to love equality haven't you?”
